La Danza de la Muerte
12 April  -30 June

If you’ve ever felt like you’ve been brutally isolated or stuck in your own personal jail cell, then you will definitely be able to relate to La Danza de la Muerte (The Dance of the Dead) by August Strindberg. However, it’s doubtful you’ve felt this sentiment as strongly as the two protagonists, who are married and have been dead together so long that they have nothing left to say. He is an ex-military man and she left a mediocre theatre career to continue her existence as a dead human being. The lack of conversation between the couple and the regret of what “may have been” leave them bitter and angry, brooding in the prison that they call home. They live this way until a third character appears, livening up the hellish atmosphere they have created for themselves with new words and situations.
This play, in Spanish and for adults by the resident La Pajarita de Papel company, is a blunt and cold commentary on getting up and fighting through each day as if it were truly the underworld. The chilling part is that their everyday experiences in death are similar to many people’s day-to-day lives. Upon seeing this, you may have a stronger appreciation for your own life and what it has to offer.
